MATT PERKINS, ATTORNEY AT
LAW
5516 SEVENTEENTH AVENUE NORTHWEST
SEATTLE , WASHINGTON 98107
Consumer Complaints
We frequently receive calls from consumers who feel they have been mistreated
or taken advantage of by businesses or who otherwise wish to bring some kind of consumer compaint. A discussion
of relevant laws in Washington State is beyond the scope of this web page, but some useful information may be found
at the website for the Consumer
Protection Division of the Attorney General's Office. This page contains
a few quick resources for consumers who encounter problems dealing with people or companies doing business in the
Seattle area.
Attorney General's Office, Consumer Resource Center
Washington State Attorney General's Office
900 Fourth Avenue, Suite 2000
Seattle, Washington 98164
(206) 464-6684
The Attorney General's Office provides information on consumer rights and
distributes pamphlets addressing a wide variety of related topics. Further, they take complaints about specific
problems, though in most instances they will take no legal action other than to record a complaint and forward
it to the business for a response. Although the Attorney General's Office does not pursue claims on behalf of individual
consumers, it is worth reporting your problem to them because it may help you get the attention of whomever you
are having a problem with and it may also help curtail similar problems for others. If they receive complaints
of a pattern of repeated misconduct, the staff may conduct their own investigation and they do in some cases take
law enforcement action.
Dealer Services - Seattle Dealers
Washington State Department of Licensing
320 North 85th Street
Seattle, Washington 98103
(206) 545-6505
Dealer Services is an arm of the Department of Licensing for the State of
Washington. They investigate complaints under the Dealers' License Act and certain other laws related to vehicle
and vessel sales and safety. They have the authority to recommend that the Department revoke a dealer's license
to sell, but they do not pursue individual claims on behalf of consumers. I recommend contacting them if you believe
you have been cheated by a dealer, particularly if there is a safety issue, but I would not expect to get any compensation
from this - only the satisfaction of knowing that the same thing may not happen to somebody else.
Better Business Bureau
Buyers Information Service
PO Box 68926
SeaTac, Washington 98168-9026
(206) 431-2222
The Better Business Bureau is run as a non-profit business but it is funded
by businesses and it is not necessarily a public interest organization. However, they do attempt to provide some
assistance with consumer complaints, and they will report a past complaint history of complaints concerning member
businesses. They also offer a dispute resolution service for a fee, and this may be good option in some cases.
Seattle Times-PI
Seattle Times Troubleshooter (or) Home Forum
PO Box 70
Seattle, Washington 98111
(206) 464-2262
The Troubleshooter column addresses all areas of consumer complaints and the
newspaper staff attempt to provide some help with all inquiries even if it is only to answer a question or give
the phone number of someone else you might call. The column is published on Wednesdays and Sundays, and they have
in the past addressed defective merchandise, auto repairs, contracts, credit problems, etc. (they even handle some
social service issues). The Home Forum column address questions and complaints related to real estate, and is published
on Sundays. They have in the past investigated and assisted with a wide variety of matters involving issues with
construction contractors, rental landlords, mortgage brokers, etc. Send letters directed to the appropriate column
and include a complete narrative of your problem along with copies of any supporting documents such as contracts,
warranties, etc. Also, let them know what you think might be an appropriate resolution of your problem.
